The Toilet: Your Wedding's Unspoken Hero

I won’t lie, I love a nice bathroom. Bathrooms are like life’s little rest stops; they afford small breaks for you to relax and collect yourself. If you’re female, they allow for some fantastic bonding moments as we can never seem to go to them alone. So today, I’d like us all to take some time to think and appreciate the wiz palaces at our weddings.

First, as a bride, you should definitely give some thought to the restrooms at your wedding venue. This is the place where you and your closest bridesmaids will be undertaking the herculean task of holding up your dress while you try to relieve yourself while not being able to see the commode. So… make sure there’s more than one restroom because you never know how long that will take. Then make sure that there’s at least one stall that can hold four of you standing at once. Don’t you already feel more grateful for that commonplace piece of porcelain?

Second, think about all the ways (beyond the obvious) that bathrooms will help your guests. When your Cousin Sarah’s new baby is wailing for a diaper change, the bathrooms come to the rescue. When Uncle Pat gets chocolate icing all over himself, the bathrooms come to the rescue. When one of your bridesmaids needs to have a very intense, very private conversation with her friend about the fact that she’s still single, the bathrooms come to the rescue. Your guests will appreciate that you’ve made the restrooms as comfortable as possible for their moments of crisis.

This leads us to the fact that restrooms are a popular place at weddings. Everyone will visit them at some point that day. Because of that, I think it’s fun to include them in your decorating plan as well. Add a flower arrangement, a basket of supplies (hairspray, deodorant, etc), or even some cute bathtub baby photos of you and your groom on the countertops of your venue’s restrooms. Since everyone will end up washing their hands (we hope), the bathroom countertop is a great place to decorate!

Going to the bathroom isn’t something most folks think about when planning or attending a wedding, but it’s one of the most vital aspects of them. So let’s stop forgetting about that important little antechamber and start celebrating it. Hooray for the humble toilet!

10 Must-Haves for a Summer Wedding

Y’all, Tennessee summers are hot. Hot and humid. Okay, Tennessee summers are also incredibly beautiful because everything is green and blooming and there are hosts of fireflies blinking about once the sun goes down, but it’s also hot.

Every season presents its own challenges to weddings, especially if some part of the day is going to happen outdoors. Summer, the season of sunshine and cookouts, is no exception. So if you’re planning a summer wedding, I recommend these ten products to help make your wedding perfect!

1. Fans

If any part of your day is happening outside, please offer your guests a fan. It doesn’t have to be anything expensive or fancy, just something they can wave to keep them cool and to keep them from rushing the bar the moment they’re able. One popular idea is to turn your program into a fan by printing it on card stock paper and attaching a stick to it.

2. Cocktail Hour

Summertime is a great time to include a cocktail hour because no matter where the ceremony and reception are you’ve likely got some outside green space that let’s your guests enjoy a view and a cold brew.

3. Bug Spray

Ugh, nature. Such a pretty backdrop, but such a pain in the rear. Some guests won’t think about adding bug spray to their bags, so I’d recommend buying a can or two and leaving it the restroom. If the bugs are bad, word will get out fast that there’s spray in the restroom and the party will continue with less scratching.

4. Waterproof Mascara. Waterproof mascara is pretty much a must no matter what season your wedding is in, but during summer it does double duty. Waterproof mascara will keep your face track-free whether you cry or sweat.

5. Extra Deodorant. Instead of just your usual swipe in the morning, bring the deodorant with you. If it’s really warm, add an extra swipe on places you think you might sweat extra heavy, like your lower back and your hairline. You think I’m kidding, but you’d be amazed at how much it helps keep you dry at least during a ceremony under the sun.

6. A Pedicure. At some point during your big day, those toesies are going to show. Treat yo’self.

7. Water. Put it everywhere: in galvanized buckets by the ceremony, at the bar, near the dance floor.

8. Yard Games. The weather is amazing! Small likelihood of rain, beautiful grass, and sunshine are in your forecast, so bring out the croquet and cornhole. It’ll give your guests something to do while you and your groom take pictures, and it’ll keep the uncles busy while the young folk dance it up.

9. Color. Let winter have its whites and fall have its darker hues, summer is the time to revel in bright colors. Pick one or pick them all because happy, vibrant colors will put everyone in a celebratory mood!

10. A Great Getaway. Whatever mode of transportation you’re leaving the wedding in, keep the windows down and enjoy the summer breeze as you drive off into the sunset.

Featured Wedding: Stephanie & Alex

I love a good theme, and Stephanie and Alex’s rustic Americana theme is one of the loveliest I’ve seen. Not to mention that there’s no better place for an Americana wedding than the home of 7th President, Andrew Jackson.

Stephanie and Alex held their ceremony in the historic Hermitage Church and the reception at the Cabin by the Spring, both of which are on the grounds of the Hermitage. There is some seriously clever and imaginative styling that went into this, and the bride executed it herself. Once you see the photos below I think you’ll want to join me in giving her a standing ovation.

Three cheers for Stephanie & Alex!

A Little Introduction

Hi, I’m Emily, the Wedding & Event Coordinator for Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage! Since it’ll be my words that you’ll read on this blog and my freckled face that you’ll see at weddings and other events, I thought it would be nice to digitally introduce myself. I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to do that. I could, for instance, write out a boring biography about where I went to school (Texas A&M University) and the number of siblings I have (1), but that’s not very interesting or pertinent to our Hermitage Wedding blog. So, in an effort to be on theme, I’ve put together 8 wedding-related trivia tidbits about myself.

1.        I always cry at weddings but not at the ceremony. I’m a sucker for the dance portion of the evening. The couple’s first dance, Daddy/Daughter dance- they all make me weep happy tears.

2.        I’ve been married eight months, and I’ve already given up trying to remember what day my anniversary is.

3.        I stayed up all night so that I could watch the live coverage of Kate Middleton’s wedding to Prince William.

4.        I do not understand the allure of Jordan Almonds.

5.        I went to Germany on my honeymoon.

6.        I’m a fierce bargain hunter; I bought my own wedding dress for 75% off the retail price.

7.        I really, really, really want to plan and coordinate someone’s Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings themed wedding.

8.        My favorite fictional wedding was Jim and Pam’s Niagara Falls nuptials on The Office.

I’ll leave you with this photo of my husband and I on our wedding day!
